Valacyclovir is used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses. In children, it is used to treat cold sores around the mouth (caused by herpes simplex) and chickenpox (caused by varicella zoster). In adults, it is used to treat shingles (caused by herpes zoster) and cold sores around the mouth. The viruses that cause these infections continue to live in the body even between outbreaks. Valacyclovir is also used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes. Valacyclovir decreases the severity and length of these outbreaks. In people with frequent outbreaks, this medication is used to reduce the number of future episodes. It helps the sores heal faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching. This medication may also help reduce how long pain remains after the sores heal. Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking valacyclovir and each time you get a refill. Taking valtrex at the dose you are taking and not starting it until 24 hours or so after you received oral sex is of no use at all except for if you did happen to be unlucky enough to contract hsv1 orally - chances are good you'd have mild symptoms. I actually recommend stopping taking it now since you aren't really doing anything by doing so at this point other than wasting your gf's prescription. I am an uncircumcised 24 year old mle and 24 days ago I received oral sex from long timr gf. She also kissed me heavily and she had a scabbed cold sore she had been treating with zoovirax. 4 hours after the oral sex, I went to the ER and was inmediately given 2 grams of valtrex and a 7 seven day prescription. I seem to be receiving conflicting answers to this question. All of a sudden I was experiencing outbreaks inside of my mouth on a specific area of my gums (behind my two front teeth) and the roof of my mouth, and also experiencing a genital outbreak at the same time. I was tested two days after and I am negative for both hsv 1 and 2. I had an oral OB in March and took 1g twice daily (i think) and it nipped it in the bud. Please let me know your thoughts about the drug and also in helping to answer my questions. I took Valtrex the 2nd day of the cold sore and it did not get better. With these outbreaks I will get the flu like symptoms everytime. and they told me they could do nothing for this since the cold sore did not appear to be infected and the cold sore had certainly ended it's duration. and was prescribed Denavir..absolutely nothing has helped? what can I do about the remaining, unattractive surface issues? I'm still trying to get my head rapped around this virus and I ty not to let it get me down, but sometimes, it's not an easy task, almost a year later. Hi, I've had a cold sore that started and went away breifly then spread to all over my lips. I got the Danivir cream and continously use it, and the affected area heals but then a new area becomes infected the next day. For 10 years I would maybe get a cold sore every 3 years. The dosage and length of treatment. Valtrex For Cold Sores – Cold Sore Overview Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are groups of small blisters that form on or near the lips. Cold sores are a result of something called herpes simplex virus HSV. Cold Sores Herpes Labialis The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of cold sores is 2 grams twice daily for 1 day taken 12 hours apart. Therapy should be initiated at the earliest symptom of a cold sore e.g. tingling, itching, or burning. The dose in immunocompromised patients is 1000 mg three times daily for at least seven days (3000 mg total daily dose) and for 2 days following crusting of lesions. This dose should be reduced according to creatinine clearance (see Renal impairment below). For recurrent episodes, treatment should be for three to five days. For initial episodes, which can be more severe, treatment may have to be extended to ten days. For recurrent episodes of herpes simplex, this should ideally be during the prodromal period or immediately upon appearance of the first signs or symptoms. Valtrex can prevent lesion development when taken at the first signs and symptoms of an HSV recurrence. For herpes labialis (cold sores), valaciclovir 2000 mg twice daily for one day is effective treatment in adults and adolescents. The second dose should be taken about 12 h (no sooner than 6 h) after the first dose. A lot of people think of cold sores as a relatively minor issue.
